
Whenever possible, we try re-use existing materials or turn to [vintage and upcycled goods](https://attic.city) -- even for things like kitchen or bathroom remodeling projets. There are some totally jaw dropping instances where design minded home owners have turned to using vintage cabinets, dressers and credenzas as bathroom vanities for example. But that direction isn't always in the cards. For a recent master bath remodel, we opted to use an Ikea wall hung vanity unit (Godmorgon). It just happended to match the exact dimensions necessary for the project. But we weren't happy with going with the stock Ikea fronts. 

If you Google "custom ikea cabinet fronts" or similar, you'll only get a handful of companies that offer enhanced fronts. If you dig deeper though, you can find more than the usual suspects. Below we list all of the cabinet makers we found that offer custom fronts for Ikea cabinets for US-based customers -- including Ikea Sektion kitchen cabinets and Ikea Godmorgon bathroom cabinets. There are additional companies that do this in Europe, but they either don't ship to the US or do so only at incredible cost.

###### Millennium Decorative Arts

**UPDATE:** **Unfortunately, Millennium closed its doors for good in December 2015.** Located in a walk down along U St, Millennium is a staple of DC’s MCM speciality market. Their selection isn’t the largest, but it changes often and is all well picked. Their prices are middle of the road and very reasonable given the quality. ###### Hunted House

**Update: Hunted House closed its doors in March of 2016. We’ve got hope they’ll re-appear as a pop-up or some other form in the future though. Where to Find Farm Style and Shabby Chic Furniture in Washington DC (January 2021)


The notions of “affordable” and “good quality” might be viewed as subjective, so let’s start by clarifying what we mean.

### Affordable Furniture

For the purposes of this post, what we mean by “affordable” is furniture that someone with a typical rental apartment, condo or their first single-family home might want to consider. The stores we list below rarely sell anything for over $1,000, the majority of items are a few hundred dollars, and some pieces can even be had for around $100. Given rent prices and the costs of home ownership in the DC metro area  — whether you’re renting an apartment in Chinatown, living in a group house on Capitol Hill or now have your very own rowhouse in Bloomingdale, furnishing it doesn’t need to max out your credit card. Having said that, we don’t mean the absolute cheapest furniture available either. Rather, we’re going to point out furniture stores that, for their prices, provide **a high amount of value and quality**, especially if you’re willing to dig a bit and maybe use a touch of elbow grease. (If you’re looking for something that you can throw to the curb or the dumpster in a few months after your internship, you might want to look elsewhere!)

And while we’re on the topic of affordability and prices, keep in mind that some of the stores on our list do entertain **haggling**. So, if you see something you like and it seems just a bit out of reach, you should definitely consider throwing out an offer. Again this applies to some of the stores below; others offer their best price from the get go and are not likely to negotiate.

### High Quality Furniture

This is the easiest of the criteria to define. Nice furniture uses durable building materials including solid hardwood, strong metals, glass or sturdy composite materials (e.g, acrylic, acrylic glass and lucite), high-quality wood or durable engineered veneers (e.g., formica) and other materials that can stand up to everyday use. The type of construction used in well built furniture might include the use of [dovetail joints](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dovetail_joint) or [finger/box joints](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_joint). Furniture that you can hope to **keep for years, decades and perhaps even generations** also uses high quality assembly hardware (e.g., metal instead of plastic fasteners).

Good quality furniture in most cases does not use [particle board](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_board), [press wood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressed_wood) or malleable plastics for any significant portions of their build material. Particle board is also often finished over with paper, sometimes with an artificial print to look like a wood grain. These materials rarely survive the realities of life, especially District city life, such as the need to move (and move again!). Or for those that have been unlucky enough to experience a flood, perhaps those with an English basement apartment in DC, these materials melt almost as easy as butter.  Also, furniture that is built to last does not rely on [cam lock nuts](http://www.core77.com/posts/27725/death-to-cam-lock-nuts-flatpack-hardware-that-will-hopefully-become-obsolete-27725). Don’t bother trying to dissemble those things and expect a quality rebuild, and don’t put too much weight (e.g., a drunk uncle) on a product that relies on them.

You’ve probably caught on that we’re referring to mass manufactured, low cost furniture from stores like Ikea. Don’t get us wrong, they’ve got some appealing products at rock bottom prices, but they’re generally not built to last as long as fully assembled furniture. Their inventory also lacks originality in so far as they manufacture and sell millions of the exact same piece throughout the world. Our list of stores is meant to provide some **local alternatives** to the College Park or Potomac Ikea; the Target locations in Columbia Heights, Greenbelt, Wheaton/Silver Spring or Falls Church; and either the Georgetown, Chevy Chase or Tyson’s Corner locations of Urban Outfitters. 

### Unique, Character Rich Furniture

Perhaps it would be even better to label this category as **(increasingly) *rare* furniture, *original* furniture, or not run of the mill**. Unique literally means one of a kind. and while you can find some one of kind, made by local artisan pieces from the stores below, that’s not the story here. We mean vintage, antique and small-run furniture that isn’t produced or **wasn’t produced on the order of the mega bazillions** and/or furniture that is no longer in production. You won’t find furniture that you simply load up on a standard retail website or flip open a catalog for and expect that the store will have tens if not hundreds of that piece in their inventory — that’s not unique, rare or very original — and you won’t find it in this post (or on [ATTIC](https://attic.city/dc/furniture)!).

### The Foundation for a Unique Piece

One last thing before we share our list. If you’re a **do-it-yourselfer (DIYer)** or furniture hobbyist that might want to refinish or paint a piece, then these stores are all great options. Many of them will have some banged up, nicked up, paint peeling pieces at even better prices than usual. With a bit of sandpaper, some lemon oil, wood stain or newer products like chalk paint, giving a piece of furniture an artistic treatment is easier than ever. But even a simple paint job requires some money for materials and sometimes a weekend to complete, so don’t waste that effort on furniture that won’t last!

However, they also have a decent selection of used and vintage furniture that you can get at really good prices. Originally located on 14th Street just south of U Street (in a place now occupied by Taylor Gourmet sandwich), they moved due north a few years back. Upon arrival expect to find an assortment of their latest furniture placed out in front of the store, furniture stacked from floor to ceiling on the first floor, and a basement full of deep bargains. We definitely recommend making an offer that’s suitable to you on their tagged prices. The surface condition of pieces will vary, but they all generally have good bones. Six months ago we launched ATTIC as a way of highlighting small, local, independent furniture stores and dealers. We did it to make shopping with them easier and to help them thrive in a city that is rapidly changing and undergoing tremendous development. We’re proud of what we accomplished with ATTIC. It has led to tens of thousands of dollars of confirmed sales at stores throughout the DMV and helped raise the profile of vintage furniture as a wonderful home furnishing option. And now we’re hoping we can have the same success and similar impact by launching ATTIC Fashion.

ATTIC Fashion is just like the original, with one twist. Every day — in fact every hour — our service looks for new inventory offerings from local fashion businesses throughout DC and into Virginia and Maryland (including Baltimore). It provides shoppers and browsers a single place to find the latest, greatest, and most stylish local fashion offerings from within your own neighborhood and community. That’s the same.

Unlike the original ATTIC, however, which focuses solely on vintage, antique and artisan furniture, we’re expanding the scope of ATTIC Fashion to include [local boutiques](https://fashion.attic-dc.com/browse#brandnew) as well as [vintage](https://fashion.attic-dc.com/browse#vintage), [secondhand and consignment clothiers](https://fashion.attic-dc.com/browse#secondhand). ATTIC Fashion is Born


The story behind how and why ATTIC was started, what it offers to shoppers and what it brings to local vintage stores was featured in last week’s Local Living section of the Washington Post.

The [article](/images/screenshot-www-washingtonpost-com-2015-07-30-14-34-08.jpg) ran shortly after the [ATTIC Launch Party](/posts/recap-attics-launch-party), where reporter Jura Koncius caught up with store owners, ATTIC’s co-founders and others that came out to support the new website. The article also ran online in the Post’s Lifestyle / Home and Garden section.

Although traffic was already increasing day by day as the word about ATTIC got out, the Post’s article led to a surge of visits. In a matter of days, ATTIC welcomed more than 4,000 new visitors and served up nearly 30,000 page views. The article also brought ATTIC to the attention of vintage and antique stores from the Washington DC area that were not yet listed on the site. Over the coming weeks, the ATTIC team will be working through those requests to increase the number of listed stores and increase the overall inventory listed on the website. ATTIC’s launch party was held on June 4, 2015 at Miss Pixie’s in Washington, DC. Journalists and bloggers were also joined by a total of approximately 150 other supporters.

Washington, DC May 26, 2015 — A **launch party will be held at Miss Pixie’s on June 4, 2015 from 6 to 9PM** to celebrate local, independent businesses and ATTIC, a new DC-born website that seeks to facilitate shopping at the area’s furniture stores. The event will feature prizes sourced from stores listed on ATTIC; musical performances by two DC artists: Sara Curtin (2014 Washington Area Music Award Nominee for Songwriter of the Year) and the Bachelor and the Bad Actress; and wine tasting from Cork Market & Tasting Room. In a matter of weeks, ATTIC has become [the largest online collection of vintage, antique, restored and used furniture in the Washington DC area](http://attic-dc.com/). It is updated daily with the latest products from nearly [30 stores in DC, Maryland and Virginia](http://attic-dc.com/stores). In DC, ATTIC currently includes well-known stores like Miss Pixie’s (Logan Circle), Off the Beaten Track Warehouse (NE), and Trohv (Takoma), as well as online operations like DC Treasure. The Virginia stores include shops from Alexandria to Falls Church and Reston. In Maryland it includes stores just outside the District up to Baltimore. ATTIC features a variety of styles from shabby chic to midcentury modern. It’s also targeted at a wide range of budgets, from affordable stores to high end ones. It is meant to showcase good alternatives to Craigslist and Ikea, as well as serve avid collectors.

ATTIC was born out of a desire to find unique furniture when its founder, Tarek Anandan, and his wife moved to a new home on the border of the Columbia Heights and Petworth neighborhoods. They had furnished several previous residences from stores around town. But between weekend-after-weekend of store visits, wading through tens of websites, numerous Instagram feeds and locally-operated Etsy stores, the search seemed ripe for innovation. After a few nights of programming and conversations with several stores, Tarek built the first version of ATTIC.

“There’s a reason we like to shop for vintage furniture, and it’s not just for the style or aesthetic,” explains Tarek. “Shopping local and shopping vintage means you’re supporting the independent retailers that make the community character-rich and distinct from other areas. It also has some nice environmental benefits.” The goals of ATTIC include:

- To make the experience of shopping for vintage, antique and other used furniture from local independent businesses easier, and to expose this type of shopping to a larger audience.
- To increase the foot traffic to and sales from DC’s brick and mortar stores, which make our streets and community interesting and rich in character.
- To promote using restored, reclaimed, and up-cycled furniture to create beautiful and comfortable home interiors.
- To lower the environmental impact of home furnishing by limiting the need to harvest wood; decreasing the need for worldwide shipping; and lowering furniture replacement needs that result from using cheaper and lower quality building materials common to new affordable furniture.

Tarek, and his programming partner Francisco Serrano, intend to improve ATTIC’s features in time. “We’ve got tons of innovative ideas on how to make ATTIC even better for shoppers and stores,” he notes, “but for now, we just want to prove the viability of the initial concept. If the stores start seeing customers from ATTIC, then we’ll know we’ve succeeded.” The response during the site’s soft launch period in early May was encouraging – the site garnered more than 2,000 views in two weeks without a presence on search engines and only minimal marketing.

The Internet’s next viral sensation is anyone’s guess. We’re nonetheless happy that with next to zero presence on Google (yet) and only minimal marketing amongst our friends, we managed to reach 2,000 views in the first two weeks of our soft launch. It’s a small, but very encouraging start.
